The property was acceptably clean, about average for a 3* room. The room however was on the top floor, originally the roofspace. I was told room 5 at the top of the stairs, but when we passed through the last fire doors at the top, there was a small lobby with three doors, none of which had room numbers. There was only one, very dim, ceiling light which didn't reach the end of the oblong room where the kettle was placed, so making a brew was not easy. There were two bedside lamps, but these didn't assist. The rafters were most intrusive, one adjacent to the bed being particularly dangerous. There was little room around the bed and the legs at the foot of the bed regularly grazed our knees. Having said that, the bed was comfortable and the linen spotless. One more issue was the shower drain was partially blocked and we had to turn off the shower after about two minutes to allow the water to slowly drain away. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and the service good. The restaurant food was very reasonably priced, and was acceptable at that price, though the food hygiene rating of only 4 is inexcusable. Location is brilliant, easy to get to, easy to get to Durham, and quiet in the evening. With a little effort and thought in the room layout, lighting and maintenance (shower, room number, food hygiene) the rating might have received another star from me but it could never get 5*.
