I checked in last Friday evening and noticed that the room was very cold because the main heating was not working. I mentioned this to the manager, who said there was a portable heater already in the room and switched it on for me.
During the night, I woke up to a strong burning smell and a strange noise. When I got out of bed to check, I saw smoke coming from the socket where the portable heater was plugged in. I immediately unplugged it as it was clearly unsafe.
It was a very frightening situation. If I hadn’t woken up and realised where the smoke was coming from, it could easily have caused a fire. Because of this, we had to spend the rest of the night in a cold room without any heating.
In the morning there was no one at the front desk, so I reported the incident to the housekeeper instead. I also noticed that the heating system had last been serviced in 2016 (photos attached), which raises serious concerns about maintenance and safety.
This was a very worrying experience, and I strongly believe the hotel needs to ensure that their heating and electrical equipment are properly maintained to keep guests safe.
Another issue was that the microwave was in the staff room, so we had to ask staff to heat our food. Later that night there was no one at the front desk, so we were unable to heat our food at all.
