We recently stayed at the Blue Heron Motel in Nags Head. I know it's an older motel, so I wasn't expecting anything fancy, but I did expect the room to match the description on Hotels.com.
The best parts were the location, easy beach access, and the large balcony. If you're not on the 3rd floor, though, your view is mostly of the dunes. There is no elevator, only a very slow luggage lift. If you're on the 3rd floor, you'll also have to lift your luggage over a chest-high railing to get it onto the luggage rack.
Our biggest issue was that the room amenities were not as advertised. Hotels.com listed an oven/kitchenette for all rooms, but our Executive Oceanfront room had neither, so double-check before booking if that's important to you.
During a severe storm and flash flood warning, rain leaked through the front door frame and even through the lock. I used almost every towel to keep water from pooling inside. We also found the bathroom outlets didn't work and were very loose, so I had to use the outlets by the bed. The toilet paper holder was broken as well.
The location is great, but the inaccurate room description and maintenance issues made our stay disappointing.
