2/10 - Insatisfatório

We booked a room for one night. The room was already vacant early in the morning when we left, but we accidentally forgot to return the key.
Around noon, I called the hotel and explained the situation. I specifically asked whether it was okay to return the key a couple of hours later since the room was already empty, or if we needed to come back immediately. The employee I spoke with assured me that it was completely fine and said that as long as the room was vacant, there was no issue.
When we returned to the hotel at approximately 1:45 PM to hand over the key, we were met by a very rude receptionist. She took the key and immediately made a sarcastic comment about the time being “quarter to two.” When I explained that I had spoken with one of her colleagues and had been told it was okay, she became dismissive and argumentative, repeatedly saying that she knew nothing about it and questioning who I had spoken to.
She also commented that it did not matter whether the room had been vacant because they did not have the key. This only raised another question: how can a hotel operate with apparently only one key available for a guest room? If the key was so critical, why were we explicitly told by another staff member that returning it later was not a problem?
The entire interaction was extremely rude, unprofessional, and unnecessary. Mistakes happen, and we made every effort to communicate openly and follow the instructions we were given by the hotel staff.
