We were looking for a home base for a few days while visiting picturesque towns along the Rhine and Moselle rivers, Rhens seemed like a quiet little town near the train and bus services, and one of its rare hotels is Akzent Hotel Roter Ochse. Built in 1699, we expected the hotel to show some age, but our room, upper right on the top floor, was fully renovated, clean, and quiet. We found it modest but enchanting. The hotel is run by a third generation hotelier with family on site. All of our requests and questions were met with calm competence by every single person we engaged. We felt supported, not just "served" by them. Management is simply top notch. Due to our daily travel schedules, we did not eat at the Roter Ochse's restaurant, but based on the unique look of the facility and the wonderful smells emanating from it each morning, it was our loss. Imagine taking breakfast on an indoor/outdoor restaurant patio bound on one side by a 6 century old town wall. Note that there is no elevator in this three century old building. If stairs are an issue, try to book on the ground or lower floor. We loved Hotel Roter Ochse and the town of Rhens. We're already dreaming of returning some day.
