We delayed booking until far too late and there were virtually no rooms available in Port Hardy so we looked at Port McNeil & found this hotel.
The pictures looked nice, the rate was very good, the reviews were mixed...
The Good:
(1) Port McNeil is actually much more charming a village than Port Hardy. So for a night this was a great choice.
We enjoyed the marina, the excellent Devil's Bath brew pub, and Gus's Grill (outstanding fresh seafood!) the restaurant associated with the hotel.
(2) The after labour day rate was good.
(3) The staff were friendly and nice.
(4) Very comfortable bed.
The BAD
(1) Bait-and-switch. When we arrived, following directions, went to Gus's for check in. Were informed that the Sportsman's Inn we booked was closed for "refreshing" and instead we'd be staying at a different hotel on the other side of Gus's, which was NOTHING like the hotel we'd booked on line.
The UGLY
(1) The room we were given, #2, was on the ground floor, in a parking lot (not harbour view as booked).
(2) The bathroom caulking was BLACK.
(3) The side table, cheap pressboard, was pitted and marked (for $10 at a thrift store you could do better)
(4) the microwave & coffee maker the cheapest I've ever seen.
(5) There was no cultery, plates, nothing The table provided was wobbly.
All in all, check before booking if you are REALLY getting the Sportsman's Inn or being shunted off to a dive with NO warning until arrival.
