This was the 4th hotel I've stayed in on this trip and I was delighted with the unexpected luxury--the best of the lot regardless of price. The room was spacious, with a huge, comfortable king bed. The bath included shower and tub separated from the sleeping area by a glass wall--ideal for a ménage a trois, I suppose. The Garden Cafe's breakfast buffet has an enticing array of western and Chinese dishes, plus an omelet station, breads, dip-your-own ice cream (and not just for breakfast), lots of fresh fruits, noodles, etc. The cafe's panoramic windows look on to a good sized pond with swans (including a black one) lazing about and magpies gliding by. Although there are several restaurants, I tried only the Chinese. The dishes were tasty and artfully crafted (a leaping fish, battered and deep-fried displayed on a stand). This was a business trip so wifi was important. It was perfect--no hassle and VPN, which is necessary in China if you wish to access gmail, google, facebook, etc--functioned without a problem. The only downside is location. The hotel is 20 min from the city center, but taxi service is excellent and inexpensive. Next year I hope to bring my family to China. When we visit Jinan, we are certain to make the Shandong our base. Although a modern, western style hotel it offers lots of Chinese charms and will be a welcome respite.
