Cons: I paid for my room in full about 2 months in advanced and the owner claimed that my payment didn't go through. I was delirious from being extremely sleep deprived and recovering from illness. Also I hadn't set up my international data package and wasn't able to confirm if what he was saying was accurate. Needless to say, I paid for the room again. After recovering the next morning was able to confirm that I was indeed double charged for my room. With a clear head was able to present the evidence to simply refund the overcharge. The owner wouldn't. Said I'd have to have Hotels.com (Expedia) refund me the money. Owner did pick up from the airport but then lied about when we'd be able to shuttle back. Online on their Google listing clearly states, "4:00am-11:59pm". He originally said to us, "only 10am". Total scam, not great first impression of New Zealand.
In addition: The shower didn't drain well and nearly overflowed even with low water pressure. The toilet was broken and wouldn't fill the bowl. Luckily I am handy and got it to shutoff after each and every flush. Also, it was odd that they rented out rooms during the day.
Pros: I read the reviews and indeed they have made recent renovations. The room wasn't amazing but you could see that they were trying. Stocked kitchenette with the essentials. Fridge, two burner range, microwave, and kettle all worked. Neighborhood seemed good and even did quite a bit of walking around. The owners wife was very pleasant.
