I stayed for a long weekend in the Gotham Suite, top floor of the Gotham Hotel. Brandon, who helped me book it was extremely nice and helpful and was by far the standout of the staff.
Within 2 hours of checking in, I jumped in the shower and mid-soap the fire alarm starts going off in my room. If you want to talk about a freakout, try being on the top floor of a Manhattan hotel, naked and wet, and trying to figure out what to do. I grabbed a robe and threw my hair in a towel and was about to run down 25 flights of stairs before realizing the alarm was only going off in the room, not the hotel or stairwell. I called the front desk and they confirmed there was no fire and they would send someone up. From speaking to the staff, they said this has happened before and it's the steam from the shower that sets off the alarm, so please shower with the door closed. There is no fan or vent in the bathroom nor is there any sign or indication of keeping the door closed so you don't have a near-heart attack when trying to take a shower.
It was a horrible way to start my vacation weekend in the city and I felt like an idiot, standing there in a robe and towel with socks and boots on while someone checked the room. The staff didn't seem overly apologetic nor did they offer up anything for the scare and inconvenience, like some extra bottles of water or anything.
The rest of the time the stay was perfectly fine but the start was enough to make me reconsider staying at the hotel again.
