Casa Cristal, San Jose
Very nice. Romantic. Especial.
Lacking just one thing to be perfect: more variety in the breakfast, which is less interesting for those who stay many nights.

Elegance in Escazu
Welcomed warmly. Very stylish comfortable room with beautiful view out over Escazu and orange flowering flame trees. Great tree with bromeliads & sweet singing yellow bellied bird by our balcony. Delicious dinner and breakfast. We will stay here again.

A must
Was a very nice unique special experience. Victor and his wife the owners give you very special attention and provides warm wonderful service. More of a bed and breakfast feel. But you can eat all meals there. Views stunning over looking the city but removed from Escazu's hustle and bustle. This time of the year the trees had so many colors especially a radiant orange. Icing on the cake, hundreds of hummingbirds. Thanks for the memories Criistal!!!

Diamond in the rough
This place was far beyond anything I expected, extremely clean and the staff was the same beyond my expectations. If you can find this place it's worst the stay. I say that because they don't really have street signs in San Jose or CR!! However the signs to location once you location them will take you to the top.Staff was very helpful and meeting other guess was a pleasure. This is a must stay location, if you visit the San Jose area with out the traffic. on top over looking the whole San Jose area

Purrrfect For Me
This unique boutique hotel was an amazing experience. I wanted to be out of the city on this relaxing trip, and Casa Crystal is perched on a hill outside of San Jose but with spectacular views of the city. The room was impeccable. Service was outstanding. The couple that own and run this personable hotel are there for you. Always answering the phone and bringing you whatever you need. Amazing ! ! ! I've been in Costa Rica for seven months and this has been my best hotel experience so far. Full bar. Restaurant. Personal service. Swimming pool. Sun deck! I am looking forward to my next stay there. Enjoy this wonderful hotel !

Excelente lugar

I enjoyed my stay. The views are amazing. I was greeted outside, the moment I got of the taxi. I ate dinner at the hotel - try the chicken with mushroom sauce. I wished I had stayed longer but I will be back.

Incredible views and service
Owner Victor is a lovely person. His staff especially Al provided top notch service and went out of his way to make us feel at home. Al recommended a great local restuarant "Laly's" in a nearby neighborhood that also had excellent food and service.

Secluded Relaxation near San Jose
The hotel is beautiful. We had an upstairs suite with a nice view. Just outside our door was a quiet lounge with balcony so it was very easy to just relax. The staff was very friendly, though we initially had a problem with the front desk manager who didn't want to honor hotels.com reservation. After speaking with the owner, resolving that issue, we were able to enjoy our stay. The included breakfast was also nice. This may not be the most convenient location for the airport, but we wanted a place near San Jose, but not right in the city. Be sure you're getting the bed you need. The single "suites" are small with single beds.

Out of the way place
Nice place. Out of the way, which is what we wanted. A home away from home.
The room we had was on the main floor - we could hear every door bell and the staff and guests talking as if they were in our room.

First Time to Costa Rica
The hotel is out of the way over looking San Jose. You will be within 5 minutes of downtown Escazu that has all the amenities of San Jose without the traffic. The hotel staff speaks English if your Spanish is rusty. The hotel is very safe with a night watchman rental cars will be as you leave them. I brought a laptop and left it on the bed stand without a problem. The rooms were clean and faced the morning sun, however they were sparsely decorated with little furnishings and no heat in the rooms, and although this was not a problem the mornings can be cool. If you have never been to Costa Rica and wanted to be close to San Jose with a Bed and Breakfast type atmosphere this is your Hotel.

Nice Hotel in San Jose
We only stayed one night in San Jose - we had to catch the Interbus in the morning for Cahuita. The Hotel is off the beaten path a bit - so I'd recommend a taxi and not driving. It was about 15-20 min from the airport on in a hilly residential neighbor hood (Escazu). The hotel staff were very helpful and friendly, arranging our cab taxi from the airport, and to our bus pick up in the morning. The room was spotless, with a huge shower and large balcony overlooking San Jose. The bed was comfortable, and though we had to leave in the morning before breakfast, the on duty manager made sure we had some orange juice and fruit before we left. If you want someplace a bit different, with great views of the city and mountains, the Casa Cristal is a good choice!

Boutique Hotel
I booked this hotel based on the reviews that I had read but It did not meet my expectations and I was truly disappointed; this boutique hotel was 'okay'. The standard room (which I paid very little for) had windows that looked out to the parking garage, I felt like I was staying in a friend's basement spare room! On the plus side, the upstairs rooms had incredible city views and there is a full breakfast included with bookings. For me, however, it was important that my hotel be 'close' to the airport so I could catch an early morning flight but in fact, Casa Cristal is not close to the airport. It will cost you $30 to get to the airport and give yourself 30 minutes with no traffic. If you are doing what I did, and just want one night upon San Jose departure or arrival, you're best to stay at a truly 'airport' hotel and take the free shuttles that are available.

Great Place if you are staying in Escazu
Casa Cristal is a lovely hotel. The boutique part of the title means that it has a great deal of charm and is small. I will say without question, that you have one of the best views of San Jose which looks amazing up in the hills at night. Everyone on staff at the hotel was extremely friendly (with the exception of the security guards) and lived up to the reputation of Costa Rica. If you go, do not select room 1. It is worth upgrading to a higher end room. Room 1 sits directly outside the lobby and main patio area. This means that you will hear a lot of noise from other guests, hotel security, and from the neighborhoods of Escazu.
The hotel includes a free breakfast in the morning although it can be quite heavy and I would not recommend it to anyone who is traveling. The pool outside is nice and the outdoor area is good. The overall hotel is very small and only has a few rooms in it. The place has the feel of a converted mansion as opposed to a hotel. Within the hotel there is very little to do and so if you are looking for this to be your primary getaway spot, you may want to consider something else.
Escazu is a main commercial/trendy area of the San Jose region. That being said, transportation is absolutely a challenge. This hotel can be extremely difficult to find so I would recommend printing a map out. For me on this trip the hotel said they had arranged transportation, but they messed up the dates. They were very apologetic, but that didn't make the process of finding transportation at San Jose airport easier. That being said, the reason I wasn't too upset is the guy that I ended up finding was incredible and knew every part of Escazu and where the hotel was. He was not affiliated with the traditional Orange Cabs that you see at the airport, but was some other type of private transportation. Normally I don't recommend taking this type of gamble in a foreign country, but for me it worked out.
In terms of getting to the hotel, the roads are windy and in some sports by the hotel unpaved. Even the locals have trouble finding the place, so provide the map to your driver at the airport because there is a good chance even they will get lost. Like I said, I lucked out with my transportation. It also is worth arranging transportation back to the airport with the same driver if possible. If you are happy with your cab experience and they can get you to the hotel, then stick with that person because finding cabs at the hotel can be challenging. It is a 30 dollar cab ride one-way so it tends to be lucrative enough for repeat business potential. The managers of the hotel can also be difficult to find as they are often tending to other duties, so when you check out, if you have not prearranged transportation, you might be waiting a while.
In terms of convenience, this hotel it not ideally located within proximity to the airport. While it is 25 minutes away in no traffic, it can take up to an hour to get to the airport depending on the time of day. If you are planning on simply spending one night in San Jose as your primary junction point to another destination, then this is probably not the best place to be. There are cheaper hotel chains closer to the airport with more amenities, although be careful as safety can be an issue from time to time.
The overall neighborhood around the hotel is fairly rural with small houses and huts primarily in the immediate vicinity. The main area has some very nice restaurants, but be prepared to either drive or cab as walking is not really a viable option to/from the hotel.
While this review may seem somewhat negative, I would say that the actual hotel itself is very beautiful and the rooms are extremely clean and comfortable. The beds are great and there are obvious amenities like television, ironing boards, ample closet space, and a room safe. The bathroom was extremely clean and overall the place had felt modern. What I would say is that if you plan on staying in San Jose for multiple days or if you want to be in Escazu, this is a great place to check out. The hotel is extremely isolated and tranquil, although you can hear activities in the neighborhood if you are in the wrong room. The rates are reasonable and the hotel restaurant is good for a night or two.
So with that I will say that choosing this hotel is largely based on your preference. If you are looking for a traditional American style Hotel with tons of amenities and convenience, this this is not the place for you. If you are looking for a charming place in Escazu that is a little off the beaten trail, then you should give this place a shot. You will definitely feel like you are experiencing something very unique here.
My last piece of advice is that arranging everything through Hotels.com worked out perfectly for me. To be safe, I also confirmed with the hotel a few days in advance and everything was in order and taken care of. I did not have the same luck with other places after I left San Jose as I booked with them directly as opposed to Hotels.com. Make sure to confirm transportation if the hotel has arranged it for you and ask for specific instructions on where to meet the driver, what company they are with, and how you can identify them. Getting out of San Jose airport isn't a challenge, but you will be besieged with cab offers, rental car companies, and so on. You may have to walk around a bit to find your guy. I also recommend having a local phone or a phone card to contact the hotel if something goes wrong. I lucked out in that the guys arranging transportation at the airport had phones and because I had all my information with the hotel, they called and squared everything away. Had I not done this, I might still be at San Jose airport trying to find my way to Escazu.

Nice little hotel, far away from the city, and...
I stayed over the Christmas holidays 2 nights here and per se the hotel is quite neat. Clean, modern etc. We were surprised that the hotel is on a hill, far away from any amenities (nothing within walking distance) and you need a car or taxi to do anything.
Al and Jose were very friendly all the time and helped where they could. Nice guys!!
My girlfriends phone, however got stolen out of the room which disappointed us very much. What disappointed us even more was the reaction from the owner when we confronted her with this issue. She only go defensive, yelled at us in the tone "how dare you accuse us" instead of really doing anything about it. Needless to say we never saw the phone again.
I would not recommend staying at this hotel. I booked it based on tripadvisor reviews where its ranked high but was badly disappointed.
