I rarely leave negative reviews, but my stay at Brownhill House was so disappointing that I feel a responsibility to warn others. Even before arrival, the communication was poor. I emailed twice about my vegan dietary needs (which their website says they can cater for) and received either no reply or answers that ignored my questions.
Check‑in was the worst I’ve experienced. When I asked again about vegan options, the host, Yoland, made several rude comments, including “We don’t have plastic bread,” “I thought you’d bring your own,” and “You ask strange questions.” She also emphasised that they use “loads of butter and drippings,” saying oil “won’t be nice.” I wasn’t shown where breakfast was served, just taken to my room. The bins had no bags, and the bathroom bin contained used tissues.
Breakfast on the first morning was very small, with warm juice, and I felt too uncomfortable to ask about ingredients. The second morning, with a regular guest present, the breakfast was noticeably larger and the juice cold. Conversations at breakfast were pleasant, but the inconsistency was obvious.
The building itself is charming, with a cosy room, deep bath, books, and thoughtful extras. Check‑out was fine.
However, none of this outweighs the unacceptable check‑in and dismissive attitude toward dietary needs. If you value basic courtesy and respectful communication, I strongly recommend staying elsewhere.
Had to largely reduce review due to character 1500 limit
