We were unhappy with this place from the beginning. We did not have a vehicle & this hotel was an hour away from Stromness by bus, but all the other hotels closer were full.
We had 3 rolling suitcases & 2 heavy backpacks to get from the bus stop to the hotel, which was not easy. The sign for the hotel was mostly hidden behind bushes; we had to push them out of the way to see it fully. Then, the entrance for guests is on the opposite side of the hotel from the approach -- also, no sign indicating that.
The window blind in the bath had a hole in it; the towels were frayed; the shower door was inadequate & water was all over the floor making it dangerous when stepping out of the tub. The toilet didn't flush properly, and the sink didn't drain properly.
We mentioned to the evening staff that we would be checking out the next morning due to many issues & were told we needed to speak to the manager/part owner, Cath, who seemed annoyed that we were unhappy & wanted to check out after only one night of our 3 night booking. She did not want to hear about our issues with our stay that night, & charged us the full rate for the 2nd night, even though we were not going to be there. The only positive thing about that experience was that she offered to take us to the bus stop.
It is called "The Sands", but there is no sand or beach.
