I booked a double room for two grown men, and the hotel — in a bold reinterpretation of the word "double" — gave us a 140 cm bed. When we complained, we were told we were "lucky" and were upgraded to an actual double bed. Lucky! To receive the thing I had booked and paid for. I still get emotional thinking about it.
The room itself had clearly seen things. Decades of things. It came with a complimentary smell, and the bathroom featured a mold collection so extensive it deserved its own plaque. We stayed two nights, during which I made the executive decision not to shower and not to remove my socks — not even to sleep — because the thought of walking barefoot to that toilet at 3 a.m. was more than I was prepared to endure.
As a bonus, our room sat directly above the hotel's gas station, whose lights shone straight through our window all night. Nothing says "restful stay" like falling asleep under interrogation lighting.
Had this room cost €50, I would have shrugged and said you get what you pay for. It cost roughly €220 per night. I am not a picky person, but at that price I do expect a bed for two, air I can breathe, and a bathroom that isn't actively growing.
To be fair: the staff were friendly, and the lobby, restaurant and bar are quite nice. There may well be nicer rooms somewhere in the building — but the smell in the hallways and elevator is included for everyone, free of charge.
