The desk staff was very friendly, and the facilities and rooms were nice. We were a bit disappointed that the Applebee’s closed at 10 p.m.- we had hoped to stop in for a snack and a drink after a sporting event. That may be outside of the hotel’s control, but it caught us by surprise. Unfortunately, we did have an unpleasant interaction with a female security officer while using the pool. My husband had a canned beer, which we genuinely didn’t realize wasn’t allowed. We’ve stayed at other hotels where this was acceptable, and the posted rules inside the pool area only referenced no glass. Instead of approaching the situation with a courteous, customer-service mindset, the security officer spoke to us in a condescending and unnecessarily rude manner. We then watched her address two other couples the same way, and they ended up leaving the area. No one was being loud or disruptive. She also stood inside the pool area watching guests, which created an uncomfortable atmosphere. Additionally, there were balloons left over from a previous birthday gathering, and she popped them loudly. She later watched the pool from the upper windows and then returned again to observe guests- all within about 20 minutes at which time we left. This made the environment feel unwelcoming. Because of this experience, we would hesitate to choose this hotel again, especially given the many other Detroit options where we’ve had consistently positive stays.
