My wife and I chose the Adelphi Hotel for a few days in Melbourne because of its reviews and great location. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a big mistake.
I don’t usually write reviews, but I feel compelled to warn others so they don’t spend their money on the same disappointing experience we had. Both my wife and I have worked in the hospitality industry for over 10 years, so we have a good understanding of expected standards.
The Adelphi is priced like a luxury hotel, but in reality it feels dirty and run down. Our room was unclean in every corner. The bed linen had a noticeable perfume smell that wasn’t ours, and both the bathroom and toilet were dirty. The stainless steel decor, which could look sleek, instead highlighted the lack of cleanliness and made it feel more like a public restroom than a luxury space.
The “complimentary minibar” consisted of a Coke Zero and a Sprite, which is far from what you would expect in a suite. Even our welcome drinks were disappointing — the glasses still had old lipstick marks on them.
Breakfast was also underwhelming. It resembled a very basic continental offering, with a dry croissant and a small selection of yoghurt.
For the same price, you are far better off staying at a hotel chain like Hyatt or Hilton, where you can rely on a consistent standard. This hotel markets itself as a boutique luxury property, but in our experience it was neither luxurious nor well maintained — just a waste of money.
