The capital of Virginia, Richmond, is counted amongst the USA’s oldest cities thanks to its impeccably preserved architecture, atmospheric battlefields and angel and ivy-strewn cemeteries. It may have been the heart of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, but this hotbed of history is also a dynamic, forward-thinking metropolis that’s famed for its magical Museum District, colourful farmers’ markets and thriving food and drink scene.
When you’re not photographing Downtown’s striking street art murals or being wowed by collections at the Institute for Contemporary Art, you can traverse the Richmond Beer Trail before sobering up at Malvern Hill – the spot where Confederate General Robert E. Lee attacked Union General George B. McClellan’s army, all the way back in 1862. Outdoor enthusiasts also flock to Richmond for biking on Belle Island, hiking in Pocahontas State Park and walks in the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, which boasts a dazzling, domed conservatory with butterfly displays and spectacular seasonal blooms.
