7. Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park

At the Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park, you can enjoy wide open spaces and well-groomed trails. There are 3 main trails you can hike, plus several connector trails to make the loops shorter or longer. The white blaze trail loop is the shortest at 7 km and the yellow blaze trail loop is the longest at 10 km.

Besides hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers also use the dirt trails, so be prepared to step to the side of the singletrack to accommodate each other. Camping is also allowed at Hal Scott Regional Preserve and Park if you’d like to turn your hiking trip into a whole camping weekend.

Once fully completed it will connect Orlando to Orange County, Osceola County and the City of Kissimmee. As it stands today, the trail runs from Eagle Nest Park to Oak Ridge Road. It passes through a mix of rural and suburban scenery.

Perhaps the best segment of the trail is the scenic 3 km loop around Lake Fran. Surrounding the lake is an urban wetland habitat. Bring your binoculars to enjoy the wide variety of birds enjoying this secluded oasis.

9. Kelly Park

Hike among stunning scenery at Kelly Park, northwest of Orlando. As you traverse the trails you’ll walk along the crystal-clear waters of Rock Springs Run, with the likelihood of seeing turtles, fish and otters swimming by. The trail is mostly shaded and is a mix of pavement, turning to crushed gravel and dirt and back to pavement. There are plenty of places to stop for photos or sit on a bench and rest along the way.

Stick around after your hike for more fun at Kelly Park. Kayak, paddleboard, camp and visit the concession stand for a snack. There’s a small fee to enter. Cars line up to get into this popular county park, so try to arrive early.

Three Lakes Loop is a popular and easy hiking trail about 40 minutes south of Orlando known for its panoramic prairie views. As the name suggests, the 8 km loop passes by 3 serene lakes in the Split Oak Forest. The trail is mostly sand and can often be wet, so be sure to wear sensible hiking shoes with good tread.

Be prepared to see lots of wildlife while hiking Three Lakes Loop. In fact, the surrounding forest is a popular hunting spot for deer and wild turkeys. Without much tree cover, keep the sunscreen handy.
