"Excellent Serive, Terrible Food."
Our stay at the Homestead was just nice. Nothing extraordinary or out of this world. The location is amazing, surrounded by nature. There are plenty activities for kids and adults to enjoy. The hotel staff was beyond nice. However, the food is really low quality and extremely expensive. Did I had a good time? YES. Would I go back again? NO.
"Jeans are frowned upon at this establishment"
In a world where everything is going casual, the Homestead remains true to the afternoon tea and coat and tie for dinner era. This hotel is gem cut out of the mountain side. The scenery is breath taking. With the Spas, horseback riding, golf etc., there’s so much to do and so little time. We enjoyed our stay but were upset that nothing we read mentioned […] that we should bring anything but jeans to wear while at this hotel. This was a girl's weekend and we were dressed for the comfort of going to the vineyards, walking the trails on the mountain side and horseback riding. Because our attire would not gain us entry to the dining room which closed at 9pm, we had to order room service. We were very disappointed with the meal. Although the lobster bisque was tasty, it was served barely above room temperature. The Caesar salad was prepared with romaine that had turned brown on the edges. The cheese cake was warm enough to start turning into mousse and although the turkey sandwich was made with real roasted turkey, it was dry and not worth the money. The accompanying macaroni salad tasted as if it came from a box and they jazzed it up with freshly cut peppers and celery. We spent $82 on dinner and were disappointed. I expected so much more from this renowned hotel. I would recommend going out to eat because the culinary delights at the Homestead were nonexistent. We followed the advice of some of the locals and went to the Country Café on 220. Breakfast here certainly made up for dinner at the hotel, but that’s a different review. Leia mais
"sooo many extra expenses"
Every time you turn around you are being charged for something new. We got charged for wireless!
"overpriced"
The service was substandard. The hotel, while charming, needs updating. Overall, not very satisfying and would not return.
"The Homestead"
The Homestead is an enchanting location in the mountains with no scary mountain roads to drive. There are many, many activities to choose from, but do plan on spending some $$$. The dress requirement for dinner wasn't our thing, but we found a great restaurant on 220 right/east that had good food and an outdoor patio. (John's) The Casino Restaurant […] has good choices for lunch...we didn't try there for dinner. One of the shuttle drivers told us about a place that the locals go, this time left on 220 - called the Country Cafe. Great homemade apple cobbler a la mode!! There is also a tiny, old restaurant in town that had a good lunch that was very reasonable - it was near the bank. Didn't try Sam Snead's. My favorite things there were the indoor pool and relaxing on the front porch. They also have a real movie theater and a bowling alley. So much to explore! Leia mais
"Bad Food"
The food is not consitant with the hotel. Very over priced and fair at best.
"Great stay, but food lacking"
The hotel is great and so is the service and the activities. However there aren't many good choices for food. Two restaurants where you need a jacket for dinner (we did not have one), a very tiny sandwich shop with a tiny selection, a packed restaurant with a small dish selection, and expensive room service. Down in the town there is a tiny Subway. […] Not any vegetarian choices, and hard to find anything my kid would actually eat. Leia mais
"The Homestead"
This resort was amazing and I would highly reccomend it to a friend. One thing really annoyed me though. Upon check-in when you sign for your room, you will be informed that there is a 15% resort fee that will be tacked on to the nightly rate. Not really sure what this covers as I was already paying a specific nightly rate. Just be aware that the rate […] that you book on Hotels.com may have a fee tacked on to it once you check in to the hotel. Leia mais
"The Homestead in Hots Springs, Va"
We have traveled to many resorts big and small but The Homestead is not all its cracked up to be, especially since it is featured as a premeire property in many travel magazines. One of the biggest problems is the food, sub-standard at best. What we found laughable was while the suggested attire was semi-formal the servers attire was casual with the […] exception of the main dining room. The other dinning options were very disappointing from the food to the service most notable The Casino. The server was extremely unprofessional, under trained and just basically rude. Serving "101" even includes showing the patron the bottle of wine and pouring a taste before pouring a glass. Lack of training, who knows but lets not forget this is a 4.5 star resort or at least that is what they want you to think because that is why you are paying such high prices. Overall the staff was wonderful which was a relief. This resort has a long way to go before we would recommend it to anyone. There are other off site places to dine and well worth the short car ride away . Its a shame that this historic landmark can not live up to its name. The best part of our trip was a visit to "Johns Steak House" this is an offsite restaurant that is worthy of 5 stars. The food, atmosphere and customer service was top notch. We would travel to the town of Hot Springs just to dine at Johns. The Homestead could learn alot from this establishment as far as service, food and hospitality. Overall, stay in the area at a Bed and Breakfast and forget the over hyped Homestead and make reservations at Johns Steakhouse for a fabulous dinner. All the other area attractions are also accessible without having to stay at the overrated Homestead. Great town, not so great resort. Leia mais
"We loved our stay!!!!"
Had a wonderful time, hope to return for a week-end summer stay!
"Venture Into the Mountains"
I was road weary after 900+ miles on the road over two days and was eager for a more comfortable travel experience. The Homestead website had that night booked solid, so I turned to Hotels.com to get me in, and they came through! Actually I was on my way to a conference and had some business appointments in VA & WV, so the location was exactly where […] I needed to be. I had a rental car and actually enjoyed navigating the challenging roads leading to The Homestead. Everything was top notch: customer service, accommodations, grounds and building appearance, food---you name it. I was upgraded upon check-in (a great way to win me over), and given a complementary dessert during one of the fine dining experiences. The food quality and service was excellent---a regal and historic venue that takes you back to Jefferson's time. Luxury resorts are usually not in my plans, but I felt the value was tremendous. Unfortunately, I was only staying one night and was not able to partake in the hot springs, shopping and other outdoor events the Homestead is known for. I am already looking for a way to get back next year. Leia mais

"Beautiful location"
Our stay was related to a wedding which took place at the hotel so we did not have time to enjoy the activities the resort offers. The Hotel was fine but the location was so beautiful that we hardly noticed the hotel! (we were there in mid October)

"Lovely resort but overpriced"
Overpriced, especially for the meals, but a lovely "special event" location.
"worth a special trip"
Clearly out of the way, but just as clearly worth it.
"Beautiful Hotel"
The Homestead is a classic. The grounds are beautiful and the hotel is full of character/

"Great Buildings"
Very nice old architecture. Decorated with a lot of interesting photos and comfy furniture.
"Fees and Surcharges"
Be aware of the added 22% Tax and Resort Fee on everything. Dinner at the 1776 restaurant is fixed price at $140.00 per person plus 22% tax and resort fee. This is a beautiful property. It's impossible to keep up with all the maintenance required for a resort that sees so much activity. Many families with small children come for the skiing. The parking […] is almost non existant. Make sure you take everything you need from your car at check in as it will be valet parked ($15.00 per day additional). The lady checking us in at the front desk wasn't very helpful after she saw I booked on Hotels.com Leia mais
