Fira, the capital of Santorini, is set atop rugged volcanic cliffs above the Aegean Sea. You can reach the town by cable car, or, if you’re feeling adventurous, by taking a ‘donkey taxi’. Once you’re there, you get to browse traditional markets set along narrow cobbled streets, check out the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, or grab an authentic moussaka in a family-owned café.
Fira is also a starting point for off-the-beaten-track adventures, as buses run to just about every corner of the island. Just a 10-minute drive away is the Santos Winery, where you can sample Santorinian tipples while enjoying stunning caldera views.
