It’s impossible to talk about Nashville without talking about country music, and many of the city’s historic sites memorialize the genre’s history in its hometown. Music lovers won’t want to miss a tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame or a show at the famed Ryman Auditorium, country music’s first great stage.
Nashville’s historic sites touch on the Civil War and women’s suffrage and reckon with the city’s fraught history of slavery. Music City’s lesser-known nickname, the Athens of the South, refers to the striking Greek Revival architectural style in which many of its historic buildings were constructed. The neighbourhood’s unassuming brick buildings can’t be called a tourist attraction, but musicophiles will want to take a stroll on these historic streets. Keep your eyes peeled for commemorative plaques and your ears open for melodies leaking from still-active studio windows.

The Hermitage Hotel is Nashville’s grandest hotel and a treasured historic landmark. The hotel was infamously the site of the final battle to secure women’s suffrage with Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment in the summer of 1920. Located just across the street from the capitol building, the hotel was filled with pro- and anti-suffrage campaigners donning their yellow and red roses for months leading up to the historic day.
Lavish in its design, the Hermitage Hotel has a stately exterior and magnificent Beaux Arts interior with a painted glass ceiling and glittering chandeliers. The hotel’s basement holds a stunning surprise: an Art Deco men’s room with bold black and green tiling, which was once crowned America’s most beautiful restroom.

Tennessee’s State Capitol is one of the oldest working capitol buildings in the country. Perched atop a hill in downtown Nashville, the building is an architectural landmark, built in the Greek Revival style with massive stately columns. A peculiar detail: the architect died before the capitol’s completion in 1859 and is buried inside its granite walls.
The capitol’s free guided tours depart 6 times per day and come highly recommended. Docents offer extensive information on the building’s history and the operation of the state government. To the north of the capitol building, the 4.5-hectare Bicentennial Park features an enormous granite map of the state, wide walking paths and fountains.

The ruins of Fort Negley look out over the city from the grassy slopes of St. Cloud Hill. The star-shaped fortification was erected in 1862 when Union forces occupied Nashville, a transportation hub that proved to be a critical strategic stronghold. Named a UNESCO Site of Memory for its association with slavery, the limestone fort was constructed primarily by a conscripted labour force of formerly enslaved people.
Although these days there is little left of the fort itself, the site is certainly worth a visit for its history and its views of the city. While the park is open anytime from dawn to dusk, stop by during the Visitor Center’s open hours for a history lesson before you embark.
