Honouring soldiers that died in the Second World War, Parco delle Rimembranze, located on tranquil Pineta di Sant’Elena island, is much more than a memorial site. Visitors come here for the fun children’s playground, the roller-skating rink and an enchanting stretch of pine forest which overlooks the picture-postcard Adriatic.
We recommend dropping by at lunchtime for an al fresco picnic out on the lawns, or a sunset dinner on the gold sand beach that edges the sparkling Venetian Lagoon. Don’t forget to stop by the many statues and sculptures that adorn this extraordinary green space, including the Scorcio Fontana fountain and the Monumento Alle Vittime del Tornado.

Founded as a botanical garden, the park is resplendent with linden trees, evergreen oaks, chestnuts and yews, which offer plenty of shade for picnics under the hot Venetian sun.
The gardens are situated behind the beautifully restored Palazzo Savorgnan, a baroque 17th-century palace that was designed by architect Giuseppe Sardi. Giardini della Biennal, that’s The Venice Garden in English, was the brainchild of Napoleon Bonaparte. Today, the park showcases 30 beautiful pavilions that were designed by eminent 20th century architects, and is home to a huge family of wild cats. It’s also the host of the annual Venice Biennale Art Festival, an international exhibition that focuses on contemporary works.
The park is sprinkled with handsome monuments like a sculptural bust dedicated to German composer Richard Wagner, and houses a lovely cafeteria where you can enjoy a bite to eat and a coffee. There are stunning views of the canal and some glorious, shaded walks. During the height of the summer, consider reaching the park by the vaporetto water bus.

Serra dei Giardini is an exquisite orangery and garden that’s located a brief stroll from the Giuseppe Garibaldi Monument on Janiculum Hill. This historic greenhouse, known traditionally as Serra Margherita, dates to the late 1800s when it was erected as a tepidarium to house ornamental plants, including exotic tropical species.
The venue’s major drawcard is the La Serra café which serves mouthwatering meals and drinks, both inside the orangery and outside in the garden. After you’ve enjoyed a cappuccino and panini, peruse the on-site shop that sells potted plants and garden tools to the city’s avid green thumbs. We recommend you splash out on a brightly coloured orchid or a delicate maiden hair fern.

It may be small, but don’t be fooled. Giardini Reali is one of the Floating City’s most outstanding outdoor gems. Casting its gaze over the breathtaking Bay of Venice, this whimsical waterfront garden is conveniently situated off Piazza San Marco, which is known to English speakers as St Mark’s Square.
Founded in the 18th century by Napoleon’s artists for the enjoyment of courtiers and nobility, the park was re-envisioned a half-century later when it was artfully remodelled in traditional English fashion, before falling into disrepair. This little green space was brought back to life in 2014 to the delight of locals and visitors, who come here for its vine-strewn pergola, Japanese pagoda trees, enormous potted figs and flowering hydrangeas.

First laid out in the 1930s, Giardini della Marinaressa is enviably situated on the banks of the Riva dei Sette Martiri in Venice’s charismatic Castello district. The venue is divided into 2 distinct gardens, Ponente and Levante, which teem with colourful flower beds, verdant green shrubbery and several meandering walking paths that are popular with tourists.
The park’s major attraction, however, is its collection of 20 contemporary sculptures that have transformed this public green space into one of the city’s most beloved art installations. Here you’ll find pieces from world-famous artists like Italy’s Emily Young and America’s Edwin Hamilton, including a silver elephant, a giant horse head and a dualistic copper face.

Flawlessly restored in 2016, the Mystical Garden of the Discalced Carmelites is a short stroll from Santa Lucia station. Situated in the grounds of the church of Santa Maria di Nazareth (one of only a handful of Venetian facades made entirely of Carrara marble), this splendid horticultural jewel is looked after by the local friars.
Come here to marvel at the beautifully gnarled vineyard, the ‘Garden of Gethsemane’ olive grove, plots dedicated to vegetable growing and medicinal herbs, and seven sprawling flower beds. There’s also an orchard that produces an abundance of native fruits and a sacred pomegranate tree. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden biblical references and homages to Spanish saints.
