5. Gelati Monastery

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Gelati Monastery symbolizes a period of political strength and economic growth for the country. Built in the 11th century, the monastery is marked by its richly decorated murals and incredible design which blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape. It was also a center of science and education and one of Georgia’s most important centers of culture.

Just a couple of miles northeast of Kutaisi, the frescoes in the main Cathedral of the Virgin are particularly stunning. If you visit during the Sunday morning service which starts at 10 am, you’ll be able to hear the beautiful Georgian chants for yourself.

6. Prometheus Cave

8. Mtatsminda Park

If you’re looking for views and something for all the family, you’ll love Mtastsminda Park, a theme park at the highest point in Tbilisi overlooking the capital. There are over 60 rides and 3 different park sections: extreme, kids and family. The Ferris wheel is particularly stunning as you combine excitement with breathtaking views.

Mtatsminda Park is best reached by the city’s funicular railway which takes just 3 minutes. A Video Games and Shooting Gallery have also been added to the park recently. There are restaurants, cafes, shops, and relaxations on site, catering for all your needs.

9. Georgian National Museum

The largest museum complex in Georgia, the Georgian National Museum is home to artifacts that have shaped Georgia’s culture and history. Some of the earliest treasures include pre-Christian gold, silver, and precious stonework which adorned Georgian graves. There’s also a 1.8-million-year-old hominid skull which is contributing to a deeper understanding of early European history.

With 16 separate buildings, the museum also covers more recent history. The section on Soviet history and occupation is particularly eye opening. A 2-minute walk from Freedom Square, the museum also offers guides in Georgian, English, German, and Russian.

Designed by Zurab Tsereteli and still unfinished, the carved monument of The Chronicles of Georgia marks 3,000 years of Georgian statehood and 2,000 years of Christianity in the country. Recently finding fame as a great Instagram spot, make sure you pay attention to the detail of the carving. You’ll find biblical references, important characters from Georgian history and allusions to Georgian traditions.

Easy to reach by public transport or taxi from Tbilisi Old Town, the Chronicles of Georgia also offer an incredible view of the Tbilisi Sea and surrounding countryside. A symbol of national pride, this monument is a must visit and displays the country’s artistic and cultural heritage.
