Beijing Double Happiness Hotel - Pequim 39.93054, 116.41851

I was looking for a hotel that would provide more of a cultural experience that the standard western hotel. I spent 4 nights here the end of November 2009. The desk staff all spoke English and were very helpful. The room was small, but beautifully decorated including a huge fan on the wall and bamboo covered walls. There was a large flat screen TV. I received all my wake-up calls (this hasn't always happened in the US). The mattress was very firm, but quite comfortable. A huge breakfast buffet was included, with lots of Chinese dishes, as well as some pastries, fruit, and a few western dishes. The mattress was very firm, but quite comfortable. There is also a lounge/bar. This hotel is an easy walk to the subway, which goes to many of the tourist sights. I loved my room at the Double Happiness Hotel.

A well located hotel,although the street it is on isn't that appealing to those not looking to see the real China. Very clean and well presented. Beds were comfortable but quite hard (Usual in this country evidently!). Breakfast buffet provided a real taste of China but also had toast etc! Staff were very helpful and wrote down the names of places in the chinese characters for us to show taxi drivers to enable us to get around. I'd stay again.

This hotel was amazing, it lived up to all my expectations and more! The atmosphere of the hotel in general and also the room were calm and serene, and very chinese. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, and spoke excellent english. The breakfast was a vast and varied mixture of western and chinese buffet. The courtyards were quiet and secluded. I was sad to leave and will definitely use this hotel next time I am in Beijing, and hope that will be soon!

The double happiness hotel is a beautiful courtyard hotel offering respite from the hustle and bustle of Beijing. My only complaint was that it was very difficult to find. It would be helpful if the site offered more detailed directions. My advice is to go to the webpage of the hotel and copy thier directions and phone number. Lost taxi drivers are quick to make calls when their limited English fails.

My stay in the Traditional Chinese Single Room was perfectly suited to my needs. The hotel has wonderful helpful Staff at the front desk, FREE Internet for the guests to use, a big breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, cable flatscreen TV (though the only US Channels were CNN and Cinemax). Many good restaurants are nearby and my room was attractive and perfect for my rest.

The 'Double Happiness Hotel' is right in the middle of a Beijing Hutong. This makes it difficult to find but also gives it considerable character. It is reasonably close to the centre, a subway station, shops and plenty of interesting local restaurants. The rooms are full of beautiful furniture, the courtyards are delightful and the staff friendly, helpful and speak some english. All this at a very reasonable price... definitely a hotel to go back to.

The single room that I stayed in was about the size of a normal bathroom, so it was a bit cramped. There is nowhere to hang your clothes for example, so everything has to stay in your suitcase. The building itself is charming, a real Beijing 'si he yuan' (courtyard house) in a long hutong in the centre. Be warned that cab drivers may be reluctant to take you down it- they will give excuses such as it closed to cars. It is a one way street, so just say 'qing jinqu' (please go in) and they will. The hotel is some 300 m from the hutong entrance, so insist. It is authentically Chinese in every respect, and therefore of course the guests are almost entirely foreign. Rooms have electric aircon/heaters which work well. Unfortunately, the controls are all in Chinese which can cause problems. There is a nice bar with English language TV and a basic but good restaurant for breakfast. The best feature of this hotel is the staff who are extremely helpful and speak good English. I bought a poster advertising cigarettes in the 'antique' market, and one of the staff found a plastic pipe at her home that I could put the posters in to protect them. Now that is service.

I stayed at the Beijing Double Happiness hotel for 2 nights in September 2008, prior to a trip to North Korea and a further night there on my return from that trip. And I loved it. A warning - if your preference is for flashy multinational hotels near the main sights, full of Western guests, the Double Happiness may not be for you. The hotel's location in one of the hutongs (alleyways) puts you right in the middle of local colour. Although the main sights of central Beijing are a bit of walk away, there's a metro station (Dongsi) within a 10 min walk.The hotel is quirky and intimate, with its outside courtyards and tinkling fountains. The rooms are Chinese in style - maybe a bit kitch, but fun. I had single rooms (a different room both visits) which had a raised Chinese bed with Chinese tea making facilities, a mini bar/fridge, air con and complimentary toileteries. The rooms perhaps weren't the most spacious and given the design of the courtyard setting, were a bit dark, but they were very clean and comfortable.I found the hotel's service to be faultless. I arrived at 11 am after a long flight to the UK and was immediately checked in by the friendly and helpful reception staff, all of whom spoke excellent English. On my second visit, I arrived at 9:45 am. The hotel having been full the previous night, there wasn't a room ready at that time. Rather than asking me to come back later, the receptionist asked me wait 5 mins whilst they sent a maid to clean a room there and then!

Simple clean hotel off the beaten path but still fairly convenient to major sites. Staff were professional and helpful. I would stay there again. 1 Caveat: Although the TV had 65 channels they were all in Chinese. If you need your daily dose of news you will need to pick-up a news paper.

Very charming!!! However, the street that it is on, like all neighbourhoods in Beijing, do es not have a street name so you need a map with CHINESE charactres. No one understands English or can read English. Don't expect to get in a taxi and say the address and arrive at the hotel. Otherwise, the place is great, with exceptional value and charm.

Mysigt hotell med stark atmosfär. Det enda minuset var restaurangen som inte rikigt håller. Jag uppskattade särskillt den historiska miljön och lugnet.

The location is great. It is safe (police office is just 50 m away), authentic, very beautifully decorated traditional chinese inn. Very helpful. Don't miss a peking duck place nearby, dodung or something, just 15 min walk.

The hotel is really nice, but i dont think you get your value for money, i have had better room that were only a fift of the price of this one. Its fun to stay in the hutons, so if you are looking for an escape from the glass and metal hotels this is an ok choice that still gives the comfort of a chain hotel

Et utrolig koselig hotell i en hyggelig hutong sentralt i Beijing. Ikke midt i turiststrømmen, men likevel nært metro, restauranter og attraksjoner. Betjeningen var vennlige og serviceinnstilte, og snakket stort sett godt engelsk. Rommet vårt hadde et fint bad, silkegardiner og aircondition. Den eneste lille innvendingen er at kinesiske senger er ganske harde :-)

Helt klart et lille hyggeligt hotel i et meget spændende område. Hotellet kan klart anbefales - thumbs up!
