"Desmond Tutu Center Hotel in Chelsea, New York"
I was drawn to the hotel because of it's eco-friendliness but I fell in love with the beauty of the room and the location. I was greated very warmly upon my arrival. Check in was quick and I was given a room upgrade without even asking. While checking in I was offered a lovely cup of mint (fresh mint leaves) flavored cold water. Did I mention I was […] visiting the weekend of July 23rd (NY heat wave). Everyone was friendly and helpful, making sure I had water with me when I went out on my morning runs and a fresh clean wash cloth to mop of my sweat when I went out shopping in the afternoon heat. The location is awesome. The hotel is just 1 block from the Highline Park and 2 blocks from the Hudson River Waterfront Park. It's also close to many shops and a few subway stops from 34th Street with Madison Square Garden, Penn Station and Macy's. So you can enjoy easy access to the sites and still have the quiet, peace and green landscape near the hotel. Ler mais
"A Special Fourth"
The Center was an excellent oasis of quiet during the Fourth of July celebration at The Hudson. A clean, well appointed room with a fabulous bed with comfortable linens. A great shower with warm water and great "green" lotions and soaps. A friendly and smiling staff who actually seem to like people. I would stay here in a heartbeat again as the center […] is great and the surrounding area is very interesting. Next time we will stay longer. We will come back again for sure Ler mais

"walking distance to Chelsea Pier for conference"
Truly had an enjoyable experience this past weekend. Rooms were spacious, staff was extremely courteous. Just an FYI: parking garage is directly across the street- very reasonable by NYC standards. Amazing restaurants and cafes within blocks. Will definitely return.
"The Desmond TuTu Center"
This is a great hotel in a fabulous location in Manhattan. There is plenty to do and to see. Loved the environment. Nice big rooms! A rarity in Manhattan for a reasonable price.
"pleasant surprise-desmond tutu center, new york"
When i first saw the name and the picture of the center i had no idea what to think. It's location in chelsea is what I wanted and the usual place I stay at was booked for the Saturday night in June. So I took a chance. I was pleasantly surprised. The Center is part of an old seminary that has a beautiful courtyard and church attached to it. I actually […] took a little nap in this green haven. The room itself was updated and clean, although the ac was not the coldest. we were lucky it was cool that day in new york. It was a little stuffy in the room but i was able to open a window to get some fresh air. It took a little long to get some ice from the front desk but overall i would stay there again. Ler mais
"Excellent"
My wife and I live in the City. However, to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary, I wanted to treat my wife to a night out (while the grandparents stayed home to watch our one year old twins). The hotel was perfectly situated near top restaurants, good bars, as well as right across the street from the High Line. Upon arriving, we were upgraded to a […] junior suite overlooking the courtyard. The room was extremely clean and very large -- it had two walk-in closets (not that we needed them). Even without the upgrade, the hotel is an unbelievable value. The only negative was the drain-stop in the bathroom sink was stuck, so it filled with water. All in all, the hotel was excellent, and I would definitely recommend it. Ler mais
"The Desmond Tutu Centre in New York - a find."
We have just returned from our visit to New York, having stayed at the Desmond Tutu Centre. The accommodation was simple, but excellent. The guest rooms are part of an old seminary. While it does not offer any catering it is a comfortable and gracious hotel. The staff were very pleasant and obliging. Most of all it provided very clean and comfortable […] accommodation. In the context of New York, our room was spacious - large enough to feel at ease, and to regard the hotel as a restful haven after a busy day exploring New York. Ler mais
"Very nice place"
We spent one night and were extremely satisfied. There is no cafe or restaurant, however there is plenty of nice places to eat out around
"Very nice hotel--just a bit out of the way"
Great room (large by NYC standards), good bathroom, pleasant service. Only drawback is that 10th Avenue is off the beaten path. Two long blocks to the 8th Avenue subway. Fine if the weather cooperates and you're a good walker. Otherwise, might be happier in a more central location. But the area around the hotel has restaurants, Chelsea Market, High […] Line--so there are things to do nearby. Ler mais
"Unexpected gem"
This hotel is a recently refurbished housing for a seminary. Large rooms, vaulted ceilings, modern furnishing with Victoriana fittings. Not much of a lobby. Free wireless. Good value for money.
"Off the beaten path"
Definitely not the most convenient location but what the hotel lacks in location, it makes up in comfort, size and price. Personally I liked the location... it's on the edge of Chelsea in a very quiet neighborhood. I just don't think it's ideal for most people. My room was large (much larger than most NY hotel rooms) and I even had a huge walk-in closet. […] It is also across the street from the hi line which is a very nice touch. I will definitely stay here again when in town for business. Ler mais

"Loved it"
If you love Chelsea this is a great place. A little noisy on the 10th ave side. Next time I'll go for the courtyard.
"Very Pleasant, Relaxing Stay"
I enjoyed my stay at the Desmond Tutu Center. It's not too far from Midtown by cab. No typical amenities, like room service or a gym, but the highline (elevated park, very cool, check it out) is nearby for a run. Also, chelsea piers has plenty of athletic things you can do, and it's a 10 minute walk away. The room I had was very small and cozy, but […] also very pleasant. The hotel is peaceful. It's on the gorgeous grounds of the General Theological Seminary. I wandered through the garden in the morning before my meetings. It was a nice contrast from the hustle an bustle of NYC. I recommend this hotel as a quiet place to stay, but don't expect a lot of frills. Ler mais
"Desmond Tutu Center - calm in Chelsea"
Who could not enjoy staying here - the service feels personal, the neighborhood is delightful and the garden an oasis of calm. Little touches make it feel like home: fruit, free wifi, iron and board, newspapers. Don't miss Murray's on 9th Avenue for great bagels and other deli treats!
"Desmon Tutu Center- a hidden gem"
Excellent staff and the room was better than other hotels more than twice the price. A little secret that will hopefully remain for my next visit. Great surrounding area, if you can ask for a room to the rear of the property away from the traffic noise!
"Another wonderful stay at The Desmond Tuto center"
We enjoyed another wonderful stay at the Desmond Tuto Center. We had an appointment across from the Chelsea Market, so this was quite convenient for us. Although it's a bit off the beaten path if you wish to see the popular sites of New York City, we walked 4 blocks to the subway and were two stops away from all the action. There are two parking facilities […] right across the street too which is VERY convenient. So although it's not right in the heart of things, I felt very safe and comfortable there. Upon check in we were upgraded to a bigger room. We were traveling with a 4 year old and the room we were originally booked in only had one bed. (my mistake) The room (#212) was beautiful with lots of room, a large bathroom, and two closets. The staff was wonderful, and went above and beyond to make us comfortable, or to give us directions or suggestions on restaurants. The last time we stayed here they had a fabulous breakfast in a spectacular hall and we were greatly looking forward to that again this time, however we learned that they no longer serve breakfast. We were disappointed to learn that and wish they would bring that back. Our beds were super comfy, but I still had a bit of trouble sleeping due to the street noise. They happened to be paving the street the night we were there so that was to blame. (I live at the end of a dead end in the sticks, so I usually notice ANY car that turns down my street...... so you have to take this with a grain of salt.) It is by no means a super busy street and there certainly isn't nightclubs with loud music or crowds of loud people running around. I certainly would stay here again. The staff was wonderful, our room was great, and the parking was easy and stress free. Ler mais
"Great Hotel and location in Chelsea"
It was great!!!
Great hotel for a great price. Really nice room and comfortable bed - perfect in all ways except for one small thing - the front rooms that look out on 10th are a little loud with traffic. But still overall a great experience.

"Desmond Tutu Center: Who Knew?"
Great Location. Really nice room. Great bed, nice sheets, towels & bath robes. Would definitely stay again
"Fantastic Stay"
I thought this hotel was great, a nice, clean, friendly place to sleep after long days exploring the city. I have no complaints at all, and would not hesitate to stay there again. The service was very efficient and friendly, it's no-frills but who's hanging out in there hotel room while they're in New York? The area is great, really charming, lots of […] places to walk to. There are some great vegan options in the neighborhood, including Blossom, Blossom Du Jour, Cocoa V, Murray's bagels has some tofu cream cheese options and the best bagels ever...soy milk available for your coffee available there and most other places as well. Quick cab from Penn Station, about $6, and about $10 cab ride to Times Square depending on traffic. When the weather is nice, you can walk everywhere. Ler mais

"Great small hotel for a reasonable price."
I had a room with two queen beds. Size of room and bathroom was great. Appeared to be recently remodeled so everything had a very fresh feeling and extremely clean. Staff was great and accommodating of reservation changes we requested. Neighborhood (Chelsea) was very nice. Area felt safe, even at night. Only drawback is the nearest subway is at 8th […] Ave (hotel is on 10th Ave.). I would definitely recommend this hotel to others who are looking for a nice, clean hotel with a good location fora reasonable price. Ler mais
"Fantastic hotel experience"
Fantastic Hotel. The staff was friendly and helpful. Check-in and check-out went smoothly. Rooms were spacious and comfy. Bed was comfortable. Good water pressure in shower. And to top it off they are "green-friendly". Location is good (parking across the street was cheap for NYC). Can't wait to make a return trip.

"Desmond Tutu Center"
This is the perfect hotel for anyone who is making their 'base' in Manhattan in the Chelsea area. As I was working out of the Chelsea Market, the location which allowed me to walk there and back was perfect. The hotel was clean, my room was immaculate, the room size was perfect for a single person ... even a couple. Even though I was facing 10th avenue, […] there were no issues with noise from the street. It was convenient (by cab) to get to the Lower East Side and Little Italy for dinner at night. There are lots of good restaurants close by (walking distance) for dinner/breakfast/lunch- particularly in Chelsea Market. I have recommended this hotel to friends in Manhattan who may have visitors coming in and need additional accomodation. I've told the people at my company that this would be my top recommendation for out of towners (as long as they are not looking for on-site restaurant/room service, etc...) Ler mais
"Beautiful hotel in a quite neighbourhood"
We decided on the Desmond Tutu Centre after reading terrible reviews of similarly priced hotels closer to mid-town and Times Square. We were definately happy with our choice. The hotel is beautiful and clean and in a nice quiet neighbourhood (Chelsea). Alhtough the neighbourhood is largely residential, there were still lots of nice restaurants and bars […] within a couple of blocks of the hotel. We noticed others had complained about distance to the subway, but it was only 5 blocks to the closest subway (approximately 10 mins walk). Although the hotel is a little out of the way, we still found New York extremely easy to get around by walking, and walked almost everywhere we went. The only negative experience we had was with the front desk service. Despite speaking English, our questions to front desk staff were often responded to with "Huh?" as if we were speaking another language. We also had the hotel book us transport to the airport on our departure. We were told the transport would cost $65 plus a tip, and that our snowboard bag would fit in the car. On arrival the driver didn't want to take the snowboard bag and took a bit of convincing to do so. The trip also cost us $85 to the airport, not the $65 quoted by the hotel staff, which was a disappointing way to end our trip. Ler mais
"Desmond Tutu Center"
Great find in the heart of Chelsea, close to art galleries and great neighborhood restaurants! Because we were there on the weekend, on street parking was abundant. Hotel personnel were very pleasant and accommodating. Small but comfortable room. Neat and clean!
"Desmond Tutu Centre - clean and quiet hotel"
This was a lovely, and clean hotel - our room was immaculate and had an extremely comfortable bed. We really liked the surrounding area of Chelsea, was quieter than Times Square and not too uber-trendy, but lots of nice cafes around. Please not though that the hotel has no dining room for its guests, so breakfast is not served here - you'll have to […] get pancakes or a bagel out! It does have wireless. Overall a cheap and comfortable stay. Ler mais

"Wonderful experience"
Great hotel. Great staff. Great location. I travel a great deal for business, and it is not often one finds a spacious hotel in Manhattan at this price in such an artsy, vibrant neighborhood. One lock from the high line. Two blocks from the Hudson. And, a spacious room to boot. Loved it!

"no hot water and inconsistent customer service"
The hotel was clean and nice, nice size room and great reviews, however, the first night there we had no hot water and the front desk acted like it wasn't a big deal. They asked if it was "cold, or warm" when it was freezing cold. Never once did they apologize that night and said that they'd have a maintenance man at 7am the next morning when I had […] a meeting at 8am, which did not help. I was told to wait until then. The second night there was hot water but then the third night no hot water again. A different person was at the front desk when we called and he apologized and sent someone up to fix it that evening. My checkout experience was lackluster with a total lack of professionalism and customer service. I would only stay again in the hot month of August when I might want to cool off with a freezing shower... Ler mais
"Chelsea Value"
Great room with windows on two sides, nice bed and plenty of room. If you're not planning on spending a ton of time in your room and don't mind three long avenue blocks (in the snow) to the subway, this is your place! The location is sneaky good- I walked to my business at Chelsea market, dinner on 6th Ave and easily scored cabs when I needed and actually […] enjoyed the trudge to the subway. Pick nits? Sure. The water coming from the shower was rusty and my last morning, it never warmed up for a shower. The lobby is more conference center than hotel but who cares. Great breakfast spot two steps away at Cook Shop. Ler mais

"Friendly staff - very good rooms"
This is a little gem in NYC. The rooms are quite large for NY and all newly done. Big comfy beds and fluffy towels - for the price, this hotel can't be beat. The room heater could have blown warmer but this is the only niggling complaint.
"Excellent place to stay"
The room was clean and comfortable and quiet. The bed was comfortable, the bathrooms were lovely too. I had no complaints about the hotel.
A very comfortable hotel in an up and coming area. Neighborhood appeared safe day and night. Located only a couple blocks from the subway, a short taxi ride from Penn Station, and a few stations away from the theater district. We hoofed it a mile to Bobby Flay's Mesa Grill -- so many great restaurants and only a long weekend. We used the adjacent Episcopal […] seminary's fitness center - a little old but perfectly adequate. The High Line park across the street gave us a view of the Statue of Liberty. Our room had some street noise since it fronted Tenth Avenue but no complaints. Other rooms face the interior courtyard but may be pricier. Hotel desk staff very pleasant and helpful. Ler mais
"A great alternative in a great location"
This place was much nicer than I thought it would be. Right across from access to the High Line and part of an interesting theological seminary, it was in a neighborhood I love that doesn't have too many hotel options. The price I paid seemed like a mistake when I saw my room - it seemed far too low. I am adding this to my short list of nice places […] to stay when I come to NYC. Ler mais
"Get to Know the Neigborhood"
Great location close to galleries, High Line, restaurant s and shopping. Everything was enjoyable and I really never had to go out to the neighborhood. I wish my stay was longer.

"Desmond Tutu Center in New York - uniquely located"
Located in a nice Chelsea neighborhood surrounded by brownstones and apartments, this was a very inviting place to stay in a great castle like building. Cozy room with comfortable bed. The subway is a bit of a walk (8th Ave. & 23rd St.) but a nice walk & a perfect cardio work-out. There is an entrance to Hi-Line Park, an old railway converted into an […] elevated walk-way; interesting idea with nice views all around. Peaceful atmosphere for NYC vacation. Ler mais
"Loved this hotel!!!"
I just moved from NYC so I am very familiar with the city, but not with staying in hotels there, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The hotel was clean and nice, and the staff was extremely friendly. I loved the location (Chelsea, right across from the highline park) since there is plenty to do in the area (art galleries, meat packing district, Chelsea […] piers, etc.), but it is not a touristy location. The seminary the hotel is located in is beautiful as well. It also didn't hurt that the hotel is just 3 blocks away from my favorite pizza place - Artichoke Basille. Ler mais
"I really like this hotel"
It is one block from heart of Chelsea and parking is right across the street. The hotel is nicer than it is rated - maybe because there is no garage in the hotel? The staff is very nice - rooms are great! - all different. It does not feel like a big city hotel but all of your needs are met.
"Desmond Tutu Center - Do Good & Have a Good Night!"
The only negative things that I have to report about this hotel are the state of its carpet - it needs new carpet as the present floor covering is quite worn and in someplaces stained (though well-vacuumed) - and the location, which is on 10th Avenue near 20th Street - definitely off the beaten path if you are not familiar with New York City or if you […] are in town to see the sites. Another plus - the proceeds from the hotel support the work of the Desmond Tutu Center - so you can feel good about that! Ler mais
