The building was pretty well kept, even if the rooms are scruffy and need to be updated. The staff is nice, and if you need to be in the 90s on the UWS it's okay. I'd do it again maybe. But my real complaint was that I had a room right by the doorway, and it was people slamming the steel door all night. Relentless. Other people complained I guess too, because the second day there was a sign on the door, and I hadn't said anything.

Great location. And that is all this place has to recommend it. The room was such a filthy carpet, it was scary. The music in the lobby is mind numbingly loud even at 7 am, which was when I checked out after one night. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. But the condition of the rooms is just so awful there's nothing they can do to make it better. It is exactly what I imagine being locked in a prison cell would be like. Don't do it.

Having read the reviews and secured a reduced rate, I was quite accepting that it was going to be "cheap and cheerful". That would have been fine, except they also proved more or less incompetent. Upon arrival I checked in and looked in my room to find that it was being renovated (black plastic, power tools, exposed fittings, etc.). When I returned to the desk to report this the staff member at first seemed not to believe me, but then relented and went searching for another room. She wasn't able to find one of the same type I had booked, and began to explain to me that there weren't any rooms, but after speaking to the supervisor they reluctantly agreed to put me in a larger room with 2 beds. So far, so good. The room itself was basic, but clean and good value for what it was: no complaints there. I went out into New York the next day, and upon returning later I took the elevator up to my room, and found the card wouldn't let me in. Returning to the lobby, I showed my ID & booking reference, and the staff member re-keyed my cards. I went back up and entered the room, to find all my belongings missing! After a few seconds the phone rang, and the staff member called me back down. Apparently what had happened was that during the day a 1-bed room had become available, so the hotel had taken it upon themselves to move me into that room, but then not bothered to let me know this was the case. I was confused, because he kept referring to a room number which wasn't either of the ones they'd put me in, and he started to raise his voice and then talk slowly to me so I'd be able to understand, which I thought was unecessary and quite insulting. When I was describing to the supervisor how displeased I was about having my belongings moved without any permission or prior consultation, he indignantly informed me that I had only paid for a 1-bed room, and they had done me a favour by putting me in a 2-bed for the first night. So far as I've found so far there's nothing missing

Although the hotel is located in an excellent neighborhood and close to public transportation and cultural/business/university places, it needs an urgent interior renovation (furniture outdated and carpet worn out). I rented a bedroom with private bathroom and I paid an extra for this convenience . Although I did not expect the interiors of a 3,4,5,6 star hotel, I expected a better reception area and a better bedroom (furniture, carpet, electronics, bedding). Minor expenses that will help the hotel offer a better service.

I was completely shocked when I arrived at the hotel to discover that there were community showers/baths--perhaps I overlooked that in the hotel description. Although subway stations are close, the location is only close to Central Park. The bathroom had only one shower and toilet and the water was cold. The elevator was extremenly small and could fit only 2 people with luggage at once, so it took forever for the elevator. We checked out of the hotel after only one night--it was that bad! Worth spending a little more to stay in Times Square or somewhere that actually has a shower and bath in the room. Was very dissapointed.

Pictures are very deceiving. The room reeked, bed and bedding was old and uncomfortable. Room was 9x9, very small, dirty carpet! Shared bathrooms with other guest on floor. Rip off!

Can't say exactly why this hotel didn't cut it with me. I've stayed at many other places similar, but this one struck me as a lonely place. It was clean, quiet (except for some external hotel noise that every room was exposed to), but still didn't feel welcoming.

The price was very low for the expensive area of Manhattan it is located. The room was cheaply priced but very small. The bathroom was communal. However, it was very clean. Room service opened the door at 10AM despite there being a do not disturb sign on the door.

I could not make the shower working (there seems no switch for that). Since I didn't bother to call for help (since I only stay for one night). For the price, it's an acceptable place to stay.

I enjoyed my stay here. The room was quite small, but efficient. There was no private bath, but shared baths, which were kept immaculately cleaned and stocked. The area was convenient to transit and the staff was courteous and professional.

Our room was great! And we only had to wait for the bathroom down the hall once. We did have a little trouble checking out because we had to leave early on a Saturday morning (about 6:30 a.m.) to make an appointment and had trouble finding the front desk clerk because he tends to disappear for 10 or 15 minutes at a time. Just as we were about to leave our key at the front desk and dash out the door, he appeared and we were able to check out. (Just make sure you allow enough time, in case you have to wait a few minutes for him to return.)

This hotel has a great location in the upper westside Manhattan. Its about two blocks from the subway and walking distance to Central Park. Next time i go i will ask for a room away from the fire doors that seperate the rooms from the stairs/elevator. They are quite noisy as people pass through them.

This is quite elegant into comparison to the Widget Hotel a block away with comparable rates! I stayed at the Widget two years ago and there's NOTHING nice about it! I got into a bathroom every time I needed one. There's two bathrooms for every 10 rooms. Europan is a great closeby restaurant. There's many grocery stores nearby and two drug stores.

A recent stay at Hotel Alexander was marred by an unfortunate incident. After spending the day site seeing I returned to my room and prepared for bed. I prepared to shower and noticed that my towel was stained. I called down to the front desk and the clerk was quite unhelpful, bordering on rude. Long story short, I ended up drying off with a hand towel. The next day new towels were brought and they were clean. Upon returning home I emailed the hotel and received an apology. I understand that a stained towel could slip through the cracks, but the clerk's behavior was not acceptable. The follow up by the hotel has been good so I would imagine that my negative incident was the exception to the rule at Hotel Alexander. Other than that the room was fine. Not exquisite by any stretch, but certainly acceptable for the price. It was in a wonderful location on the Upper West Side very close to the subway, the Hudson River Park and Central Park. I will consider staying at Hotel Alexander again, as should you.

The hotel has no parking however there is a garage right across that goes for about $35 dollars a day. Be careful if you park in front of the hotel on the street because they clean between 11:30 am and 1:30 pm and they will give you a ticket. Hotel room was tight but clean. No bugs. Room could use more heating. Bathroom is shared which makes me uncomfortable but it had the appearance of being clean however the smell was bad. There is one elevator and it is quite small. We were three people and not one more fit in there. Hotel is two blocks from the subway so that was convenient. During the day and night the hotel is pretty quiet. All and all ... it served its purpose.

The elevator didnt work, and i was on the sixth floor. I needed three rooms to get one that had a tv that turned on. The biggest thing was the communal bathroom. No private bathroom.

If you are looking for a fancy, lavish, upscale, or a modern hotel, this place is not for you. If all you need is a bed and safe place to keep your stuff while you are away seeing the city, this is the perfect place for you. This hotel isn't really "nice". That is just because it is an older building that hasn't really been modernized. They have done some renovations to the hotel, just not in the guest rooms. This hotel is clean, but it is just old. For the price and the location you can't beat it. The only drawback was that the elevator wasn't working during our stay. They are in the process of "modernizing" it. But that wasn't really to much of a problem for a pair of 20 year old legs to go up 7 floors. If you are on a budget and you plan on spending most of your time out in the city then I highly recommended this hotel for you. It is cheap, clean, and most importantly in a safe neighborhood.

the hotel was exactly what you can expect from a 1 1/2 star hotel. Things were clean in the lobby, the bathrooms were clean but they had chipped tubs and chipped toilet seats. my bed had a long black hair in it, some crubs etc so i never slept in it. we ended up getting an upgrade to the 4th floor since the first room we were in was next to some screaming people. Con: the elevator was broken so we had to walk everytime and the stairs were super super tiny. Other than that, there is free wireless downstairs, the towels were fresh both days of our stay and the maids cleaned the bathrooms daily. It was in the nice neighborhood of the upper east side, but a 15 min subway ride and a $20 cab ride to soho/the village area.

the hotel was great. one of the things that i enjoyed was that all the rooms had its t.v. and it was well decorated. the rooms are afordable and very neat. i loved it. they also got great price.

I was pleasantly surprised by the location, friendliness of staff and cleanliness of room and shared bathroom. I was not sure what I would get for the cheap price I paid, but I got a double bed next to the shared bathroom and both were new and clean. I was two blocks from the subway station and a street full of lots of stores, restaurants and great bakeries. The challenge was that I was on the 7th floor and the elevator was broken. The first day I was 3 blocks away and realized I had forgotten something. I had to go back and climb 7 flights of stairs. After three days my legs were killing me but I cannot say I did not need the exercise. Thank goodness I was traveling light and did not need to carry a lot. The floor can get a bit noisy but after climbing 7 flights of stairs and a full day in NYC, I fell asleep right away and the noise did not bother me. I would definitely recommend it and I will return. As the staff member said to me when I left, hopefully when you return the elevator will be fixed. Or not!

The Alexander is a perfect low price Hotel. I found the shared bath to be clean and when used and soiled over night the maid service was there first thing to spruce them up. After I checked in and got to the room I found no towels for my use, but then heard footsteps running down the hallway and a knock on my door it was the maid with my towels. The morning coffee service smelled good but I didn't stop for it as I had a train to catch. All the staff I encountered seemed friendly enough and courteous. The elevator was however out of order. Not a big problem but a minor inconvenience, hopefully only temporary.

I was a little shocked when I arrived and my room was not even made up. The bed was naked and the mattess and box spring was leaning upright against the wall. The room was littered with dirty laundry, no towels, and the TV Remote was missing. We had to share bathrooms with the whole floor. Noisy neighbors, UHH

I went into getting this level of hotel being a little unsure, so I only booked one night to start. At the Hotel Alexander I was very pleasantly surprised. The sheets, carpet, towels, etc. are a little older but everything was clean & quite comfortable. The room was pretty big, motel 6-ish. The staff was nice and helpful. From my experience, it seems like the people that wrote a negative review fall into one of these categories. 1.They had the rare & random bad situation, which happens anywhere. 2.They are the types that are chronically unhappy. 3.They are NOT being realistic about the price range they are in. I think this was a great value and I honestly wish I had this option in every other city. I stayed in a room with NO bathroom: a shared bathroom... there were two bathrooms on my small floor of approx. 15 rooms. Everything was marble or tile and very clean. I was not familiar with this arrangement so I had to get acclimated, but it was all clean and reasonable. The only negatives I found in the bathrooms were that: 1. there was no hand soap, in the bathroom or provided in the rooms like the towels, floor towel. etc. They did provide the small & common hotel shampoo so we used it as hand soap. 2.the hot & the cold water were backwards in the shower. It was a rotary type handle where you spin the handle around to the temperature that you want. I almost left, frustrated of course, as it never got even remotely warm & then it occurred to me to put in on cold & check. Sure enough... the hottest temp. is just before "Off" on the dial & so it's the weakest pressure. But it was strong enough, plenty hot & very nice. I think both of these decisions on the hotels part were likely due to customer abuse & to save costs & they make sense and seem fair to me. I do not in any way work for the hotel or know them. I never heard about them until the day before & I was very happy with everything. I honestly feel like a got away with a steal. I will recommend it to all of my fri

My boyfriend and I were very unhappy with my stay at The Hotel Alexander. Unlike most who probably stay here hostel style. My boyfriend and I stayed in a private room for the night. When we got there, the room was not ready and we were not early. When we got into the room, the sheets were still damp and not dried properly. They claimed it was the air freshner which was very untrue. When I sat on it, I felt the dampness right through my clothes and the sheets were wet as well. The heat was limited, clicking on and off there was no remote for the T.V. The desk was blocking the closet so you can't use it and the bed was horribly uncomfortable. We were not expecting luxury for a low price, but a comfy bed, consistant heat and closet we can use...that we expect for their rate. We will not be back. Oh, the coffee they say they offer in the morning was pleasant atleast but would run out quickly and you had to keep waiting to get a cup. Even if you just need one night, it's not worth the rate. I'd rather have a shared bathroom with a very comfy bed and a T.V. with a remote and use of my closet.

The hotel is conveniently located about a block from the 94th Street metro stop. The neighborhood feels safe and has quite a few good restaurants and cafes nearby. There is a good Mexican restaurant on Amsterdam and a good diner up Broadway. The room was pleasant and quite nicely furnished, although the heat was on MUCH too high--in the high 80s. There was free coffee in the morning. BUT our arrival and first night were very unpleasant. The man at the reception desk was all out rude. We had reserved a double room with private bed, but discovered a single. He hardly apologized, and instead suggested that this happens frequently. He also refused to note down the name of another of the guests whose luggage had not arrived and was to be delivered by the airline. The first night was also very noisy with doors banging throughout the night, loud music, and strange metallic clanging in the early morning. Thankfully the next two nights of our stay were quiet and the receptionists (we never saw the first guy again) were more than kind.
